The History of Redwood Veterinary Hospital in Vallejo, CA
Dr. Richard Schumacher established Redwood Veterinary Hospital in 1978. At that time, the hospital sat on the outskirts of town with the only other business in the area being the auto dealership across the street. In 1987, Drs. Huebner and Fox joined Dr. Schumacher, and they took over ownership of the practice in 1990 when Dr. Schumacher retired.
Since 1990, Redwood Veterinary Hospital has grown from a two-doctor, small-group practice to a multi-disciplinary, eight-doctor practice. Despite this growth, we have never lost sight of our original mission: To provide the highest quality, most contemporary and compassionate veterinary health care to Vallejo/Benicia area pets. Some say that these guiding principles are the very reason for our growth and popularity.
Our growth has allowed us to meet the ever-growing demand for modern medical care for animal family members. Some highlights include close relationships with Solano Pet Emergency Clinic – the local emergency/critical care facility in Cordelia, Ca. as well as SAGE Centers for Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Care – a large 24h/7 day-a-week veterinary referral center in Concord, Ca. Technologies, such as diagnostic ultrasound-both cardiac and abdominal, endoscopy, digital radiology (dental and full body), on-site internal medicine, surgery, and radiology specialist services, have improved our ability to accurately diagnose illnesses and plan more specific and effective therapies. In recent years, a special focus on multimodal pain management has improved the comfort of our patients as well.
For more than 30 years, Redwood Veterinary Hospital has successfully achieved accreditation by the American Animal Hospital Association. This accreditation requires regular on-site evaluations based on the highest standards in veterinary medicine and puts us in an elite group of veterinary hospitals throughout the United States and Canada.
We invite you to review the AAHA Standards, widely considered the benchmark for veterinary excellence in our profession. They are the guiding force for our practice.
